Dysthymia is a type of recurrent and mild depression that can grow into chronic proportions. It is often considered to be low grade depression that is broken by bouts of normal mood. This intermittent nature of dysthymia makes it particularly hard to treat since the doctor may be fooled into thinking that the treatment is actually working when in real sense it is not. It may also make the person imagine that the persistent low moods and feelings of depression are the norm, which is not a good idea. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that accompanies people during particular months of the year.
